Ruby was born in New Zealand and has sung for as long as she can remember. She was naturally blessed with a rich, warm voice, an exceptional range and an innate gift for pitch and timing.Asked to describe her unique style she once said: "I feel a strong connection with my past and a sense of wonder at each note when I sing - I bring my whole life's experience to the stage." |
Since July
2000 Ruby has been based in Melbourne, where she has sung with the city's
most notable jazz musicians at numerous high profile venues.

I come from a musical family and singing has been a happy part of my life for as long as I can remember. The joy it has given me is something I’ve always loved sharing with others. When I was as young as seven, I would go door to door with my ukulele singing songs for the neighbours in our street. There was always a smile from my ‘audience’, and they would often – particular older people – invite me in and tell me a story in return. My
school years were spent in school choirs, musical plays, and church
concerts. Later, spare time was filled with gatherings of family and
friends, where there was always a guitar and songs. Eventually, I had my own 200-seat restaurant in a small town in New Zealand, where I sang 6 nights a week. It was hard work, but what kept me going was the buzz every night: a full house of happy people having a great time with food, wine and music. The move to Melbourne to further my career in July 2000 has been a good one for me. Not only have I had the opportunity to perform with some of Australia’s best musicians, I have also been able to meet so many people who love our music, and come back time after time to my performances and shows. I get the greatest pleasure from making people happy by singing for them. For me, that's what performing is all about. |
